“Haciendo limpia salvaje. Tengo un número de tres dígitos de pantalones vaqueros acumulados durante 20 años. ¿Qué clase de tara tengo para pensar que eran necesarios”. Esta confesión que la periodista Luz Sánchez-Mellado hizo en Twitter el fin de semana pasado se repite ahora en muchas casas del país. El confinamiento y las horas muertas en casa dan de nuevo alas a uno de los sectores de mayor crecimiento de la moda: la segunda mano.
Basta con echar un vistazo a Instagram para ver que no sólo la periodista ha aprovechado la cuarentena para limpiar armarios. Las influencers que hasta ahora enseñaban nuevos modelos cada semana, ahora reflexionan sobre la cantidad de ropa que acumulan sin usar y muestran sus nuevos armarios ordenados.
Gran parte de esas prendas que ya no tienen espacio en los armarios terminarán en plataformas como Vinted (que el año pasado compró la española Chicfy), especializadas en la compraventa de moda de segunda mano. El sector juega además con la ventaja de que la mayoría de sus operadores son pure players, por lo que continúan operando pese al cierre impuesto de comercios.

El mercado global de la moda de segunda mano alcanzó 24.000 millones de dólares en 2018, según datos del operador especializado Thredup y la compañía de análisis GlobalData. El sector ha crecido 21 veces más que el retail de moda tradicional en los últimos tres años.
Hasta 2013, todo el sector se concentraba en donaciones y las conocidas como thrift stores, tiendas de artículos usados cuyos ingresos se destinan generalmente a caridad y muy comunes en Estados Unidos.
A partir de 2014, comenzaron a irrumpir nuevos actores, como TheRealReal, el propio Thredup o Poshmark, que operan únicamente online y han crecido aupados por la moda de la sostenibilidad. Igual que Vente Privee dio glamour a la venta de stocks, este tipo de operadores han hecho de la segunda mano una opción cool.
Según los datos de Thredup, el mercado de la ropa de segunda mano alcanzará 51.000 millones de dólares en 2023, de los cuales 23.000 millones procederán ya de estas empresas especializadas en la reventa.
El crecimiento viene motivado en gran parte por el volumen de compradores: en 2017, 44 millones de mujeres compraron ropa de segunda mano, y en 2018 el número se disparó hasta 56 millones. El fenómeno tiene especial penetración entre la generación Z: en ese grupo de edad, una de cada tres mujeres comprará ropa en el próximo año.
