Este 14 de octubre se conmemora el 218 aniversario del nacimiento del matemático y físico belga, Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateaus, reconocido por definir el principio de la persistencia de los estímulos luminosos en la retina y determinó que su duración es una décima de segundo. Es por esta razón que Google le dedica su doodle.
Las investigaciones de Ferdinand Plateaus determinaron que el tiempo de una décima no es constante, sino que aumenta cuando el ojo está adaptando a la oscuridad, ese es el mecanismo por el cual, a partir de imágenes fijas, percibimos la sensación de movimiento durante la proyección de una película.
En 1832, Plateau construyó, el primer dispositivo capaz de proporcionar la ilusión de una imagen en movimiento a partir de una secuencia de imágenes fijas, al que llamó “fenaquistoscopio”.
