Pyrates, el textil español lanza su primera ‘start up’ en décadas arropada por Asics

Pyrates, la primera start up que lanza el textil español gana tamaño arropada por Asics. De querer lanzar su propia colección de ropa cómoda cuando aún estudiaba secundaria a desarrollar una nueva generación de tejidos con propiedades cosméticas, antibacterianas y que mejoran la circulación, la emprendedora Regina Polanco se ha colado en esta industria por casualidad. Ahora, tras varios años de investigación y desarrollo en España y Alemania, su proyecto gana enteros bajo el paraguas de la incubadora de start ups de Asics.

La empresa de Polanco estuvo entre las cinco que lograron entrar en el hub de Asics de un total de 180 proyectos que optaban a ello. De las cinco start ups, sólo dos son españolas, y la de Polanco es la única dedicada a la innovación textil. La emprendedora también es la única mujer de la incubadora y la que se aleja de la media de cuarenta años del resto.

En 2018, Pyrates prevé facturar alrededor de 160.000 euros; y para 2019, ya de la mano de Asics, llegar al medio millón de euros. Los planes del grupo japonés de moda deportiva con Pyrates pasan por lanzar una colección conjunta, lo que dará la opción a Polanco a escalar por primera vez su producción y empezar a testar en el mass market sus innovaciones textiles.

Polanco inició este proyecto hace cinco años, aunque asegura que barruntaba la idea desde hacía al menos una década. El punto de partida del proyecto fue el de hacer ropa cómoda y bonita. Mientras estudiaba secundaria en un internado en Suiza, la emprendedora pensaba en cómo encajar la formalidad en la indumentaria del día a día con la comodidad de la prenda deportiva.

Más adelante, Polanco se embarcó en la universidad, donde obtuvo los grados de Derecho y Políticas. Ya instalada en Madrid, el run run de cambiar persistía. “En el último año de carrera contacté con una diseñadora y puse en marcha el proyecto”, explica. Polanco lanzó entonces su propia marca de moda y entró en contacto con la realidad de la industria y el comercio en el país.

“A lo largo del proceso, me di cuenta que lo que me faltaban eran los tejidos, porque no los encontraba”, asegura. La segunda colección que Polanco tardó tres años en llegar al mercado, pero lo hizo con materiales propios. “Dediqué tres años a investigar para desarrollar los tejidos que quería y que son los que ahora utilizamos y también comercializamos”, subraya.

Por el momento, Polanco lleva diseñados cinco tejidos con fibras vegetales y algas, que aportan propiedades cosméticas, como la hidratación, mejoran la circulación de la sangre o tienen propiedades antibacterianas. “Hay algunos tejidos que aportan estos elementos, pero a partir de acabados, y mi objetivo fue hacerlo desde la propia fibra”, apunta.

Polanco dio sus primeros pasos en la investigación textil en el centro tecnológico Aitex. Más tarde, ganó un premio en Alemania con Deustche Telekom, que le abrió las puertas a continuar su proyecto en Berlín, donde pusieron a su disposición un laboratorio y contactos con centros tecnológicos textiles del país.

“Fue un proceso largo: primero en dar con el hilo y después con el tejido”, explica Polanco, que relata cómo las primeras muestras se rompían, no se podían lavar ni planchar. Para todo este desarrollo, la emprendedora hizo también una búsqueda de proveedores, primero en España, después en Portugal y, finalmente, en Italia. Cerca de Milán, Polanco explica que dio con un histórico del textil italiano que le tendió la mano.

“Creyeron en mi proyecto y fue como una historia de amor: empezaron a trabajar conmigo sabiendo que les costaba más que lo que les aportaba, pero aún así confiaron, y aún confían”, apunta. Una vez establecida la cadena de producción, llegaron los primeros pedidos de marcas y Polanco abrió el negocio B2B, en el que nunca había pensado.

“Empecé entonces a desarrollar los dos negocios: mi propia marca y proveer a terceros”, señala la emprendedora, que asegura que el hecho de ser también un negocio de moda puede entender qué necesitan las demás firmas. Por el momento, ha realizado colecciones para la cadena de gimnasios Arsenal y Beatness.

“El textil es un sector fascinante, pero muy antiguo y muy a la antigua usanza”, asegura Polanco, quien subraya que no es una industria ni de mujeres ni de jóvenes. “Tenía 21 años cuando salí a buscar proveedores y creo que pensaban que no sabía nada de nada”, asegura. Han pasado sólo unos meses de aquella búsqueda y Pyrates ha expuesto ya en las ferias textiles de Múnich y París.
