Harrods mira más allá de Reino Unido. El grupo británico de grandes almacenes tiene previsto abrir en China su primer establecimiento fuera de su mercado local. La compañía tantea la apertura de un centro en el país asiático para 2020.
Bajo el nombre de The Residence, el punto de venta de Harrods en China estará ubicado en el distrito Pudong de la ciudad de Shanghái. El establecimiento, donde se comercializarán artículos de lujo, tendrá su entrada limitada a consumidores privados y ofrecerá otros servicios como restauración y eventos.
Michael Ward, director general de la empresa, ha explicado que la compañía lleva más de una década invirtiendo en el país asiático, según Daily Telegraph. “Vemos un crecimiento continuo de China, pero vemos la necesidad de residir en el país”, ha señalado.
Fundado en 1849 por Charles Henry Harrod, el establecimiento de Londres recibe cada año quince millones de visitantes. La tienda cuenta con alrededor de 90.000 metros cuadrados de superficie comercial repartidos en cinco plantas. Actualmente, la empresa es propiedad del fondo soberano de Qatar, Qatar Holding, que en 2010 adquirió la empresa por 1.500 millones de libras (1.691 millones de euros).
