Adiós a la matriarca de Columbia. Ger Boyle, hija de los fundadores del grupo y presidenta durante los últimos cincuenta años, ha fallecido este sábado a los 95 años.
Alemana de nacimiento, emigró de la Alemania nazi a Portland junto a sus padres cuando tenía 13 años. Fueron ellos, Paul y Marie Lamfrom, quienes fundaron la empresa especializada en equipamiento deportivo en 1938. La muerte temprana de su padre a principios de los años sesenta y la de su esposo, que murió de un ataque al corazón cuando ejercía de presidente, la situó al frente de Columbia en 1970 cuando tenía 47 años.
Boyle se convirtió en la primera mujer líder en la industria del calzado y la moda outdoor. Junto a su hijo, Tim Boyle, actual consejero delegado de la compañía, impulsó las vendas de Columbia hasta los 3.000 millones de dólares y consiguió revalorizar el precio de las acciones más de un 1.100% desde su salida a bolsa en 1998. Hoy, el grupo Columbia es propietario de grandes marcas: PrAna, Mountain Hardwear y Sorel.
El grupo Columbia cerró los nueves primeros meses del año con unos ingresos que superaron en un 10,7% a los obtenidos en el mismo periodo del año pasado hasta 2.087,6 millones de dólares. Estados Unidos sigue representando el principal mercado de la empresa textil con unas ventas que generan una cuota superior al 50%.
