En 2015-2016, más hombres estadounidenses tendían a tener sobrepeso, pero no obesidad, en comparación con las mujeres. Sin embargo, la prevalencia de obesidad de grado 3 (un índice de masa corporal de 40 o más) era casi dos veces más alto entre las mujeres que entre los hombres, un 10 por ciento frente al 5,6 por ciento.
La obesidad de grado 2 o superior aumenta significativamente el riesgo de muerte.
