El presidente del Banco Mundial, David Malpass, dice que las perspectivas económicas mundiales se están deteriorando en medio de la incertidumbre relacionada con el brexit, las tensiones comerciales y una recesión en Europa.
“El crecimiento global se está desacelerando”, declara Malpass en Montreal, en un discurso antes de las reuniones anuales del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) y el Banco Mundial. La economía mundial ahora parece aún más débil que el pronóstico del banco para junio con un crecimiento de 2.6 % en 2019, “impactado por el brexit, la recesión de Europa y la incertidumbre comercial”, agrega.
Malpass renueva su advertencia de crecimiento global ya que los inversionistas están atentos a varios problemas importantes que podrían llegar a un punto crítico en el último trimestre de 2019.
Los indicadores económicos de Europa parpadean en rojo a medida que una caída en la fabricación afecta cada vez más la demanda interna, ante temores por las políticas comerciales de Estados Unidos y China, además de los efectos aún imprevisibles del brexit.
Malpass repite sus críticas a los europeos de los aproximadamente US$15,000 millones en bonos con rendimientos cero o negativos, describiéndolos como “capital congelado” que desvía recursos del crecimiento y beneficia a tenedores de bonos y emisores de deuda.
Los jefes de las instituciones mundiales se reúnen en medio de una creciente preocupación sobre cómo las amenazas de guerras comerciales del presidente de EE.UU., Donald Trump, al brexit pesan sobre la expansión mundial.
También hay caras nuevas después de que la directora gerente del FMI Christine Lagarde se fue para dirigir el Banco Central Europeo y fue sucedida por la economista búlgara Kristalina Georgieva, exdirectora ejecutiva del Banco Mundial.
El FMI también ha indicado que podría reducir su perspectiva para 2019 después de que el fondo proyectó un crecimiento de 3.2 % en julio, el más bajo desde la crisis financiera.
Trump nominó a Malpass en febrero, eligiendo así a un seguidor que había criticado a China y respaldado una reforma global. Malpass, quien anteriormente describió al prestamista como ineficiente y reacio a recortar fondos para los países en desarrollo que crecen en mercados emergentes dinámicos, fue elegido en abril para cumplir un mandato de cinco años.
