Crisis total: Aerolíneas del mundo al borde de la bancarrota
Es una realidad que el coronavirus (Covid-19) se sigue expandiendo mundialmente sin que nada lo detenga. Contamina personas, pero afecta también sensiblemente áreas de negocios asociadas al transporte. Y es sobre las líneas aéreas que se empiezan a sentir los primeros devastadores impactos. La demanda de pasajes disminuye rápidamente tanto en líneas aéreas regionales como internacionales.
La gente empieza a cancelar vuelos tanto de placer como de negocios, no sólo por el miedo a contraer el virus sino, adicionalmente, por las condiciones restringidas de conexiones, así como por las férreas medidas sanitarias impuestas para la entrada o movilización en algunos países.
Dada esta situación, la mayoría de las líneas aéreas ve cómo se reducen drásticamente los ingresos, que no son suficientes para cubrir los altos costos fijos necesarios para mantenerse operativas.
Por las restricciones a la circulación impuesta en distintos países y el desplome de la demanda de pasajes, la aerolínea Latam anunció que reducirá en un 90% la operación de vuelos internacionales. Si bien parece una medida drástica, replica lo que está sucediendo en todo el mundo. Para sobrevivir a la turbulencia generada por la pandemia del coronavirus, las compañías aéreas recortan vuelos masivamente.
La estrategia de Latam se corresponde con la de muchas otras empresas aéreas que definieron reducir sus operaciones a una cantidad mínima de vuelos mientras la situación se normaliza.
United Airlines, del International Airlines Group (IAG), British Airways, Aer Lingus e Iberia, Air France-KLM, easyJet, Finnair, Air New Zealand y Aeroflot también dieron a conocer medidas drásticas para reducir costos después de que varios países, incluidos Alemania y España, cerraran sus fronteras. En tal sentido, Willie Walsh, jefe de IAG, demorará su retiro para dirigir al grupo a través de la emergencia que atraviesa. Al anunciar una reducción del 75% en la capacidad en los próximos dos meses, Walsh dijo que no había garantía de que muchas aerolíneas europeas sobrevivan a la pandemia por el coronavirus.
Ryanair Holdings y Air France-KLM anunciaron recortes aún más profundos, de 80% y 90% respectivamente. Además, los dos aeropuertos más grandes de París planean cerrar las terminales, ya que los principales centros de viajes de todo el mundo permanecen casi vacíos.
La norteamericana United también anunció ayer que reducirá su capacidad aproximadamente un 50% en abril y mayo, en una decisión que profundiza los recortes dispuestos con anterioridad. También definieron que los salarios de los ejecutivos se reducirán a la mitad y que comenzarán las conversaciones con los sindicatos para ajustar las remuneraciones.
Las acciones reflejan el miedo a que el virus amenace la supervivencia de incluso las compañías más saludables financieramente, en la medida que las personas continúen permaneciendo en sus hogares y la enfermedad achate las expectativas de crecimiento económico.
Según calculó la Asociación Internacional de Transporte Aéreo (IATA) a principio de mes, por los efectos del coronavirus las aerolíneas podrían restar hasta US$113,000 millones a sus ingreso y la situación podría empujar a la quiebra a las empresas del sector que se encuentran en un equilibrio financiero delicado.
